Recently we visited "The House of China" at the International Cottages in Balboa Park, I found out that Monday January 23rd is the first day of the 4709th Chinese Year, it is the year of the dragon. The holiday is celebrated for 15 days. There are several beliefs that need to be known however the one that has caught my attention the most is that dustpans and brooms are to be put away, this is because you don't want to "sweep" away good luck! You do not clean for the entire holiday it is tradition.
Since the color of red represents good fortune it is the color of choice when decorating for the New Year. It is also the color chosen to wear along with gold.
The New Year meal is prepped and cooked at home with family and friends. It is a big feast. All the festivities are celebrated positively which means that everyone wishes each other the best!
