Birds of the Sea

Discover Science, Exploration & Adventure! The tiny Storm Petrel bird spends its entire life at sea, only coming to shore to lay its eggs and nest for a short period each year. Learn more about amazing ocean-going birds and discover how adaptations allow them to survive in a watery world. Meet Scripps Oceanography scientists studying birds, learn about amazing migrations, and find out the best spots to catch a glimpse of these amazing creatures. Young adventurers can make a bird craft and listen to story time. Included with admission.
Whale Watching

Join Scripps naturalists and Flagship Cruises & Events for our 12th season of whale watching as we venture out for twice-daily cruises to locate gray whales on their round-trip migration from their Alaska feeding grounds to Baja California. Search for seals, sea lions, dolphins, migrating birds, and more! Naturalists will showcase gray whale biofacts and will answer all of your marine animal questions. Learn from today’s experts at the California Center For Sustainable Energy how wind energy can still be used to power our daily lives. This family-friendly event is full of breezy hands-on activities and projects. Included with admission.

Get ready for a true Southern California experience! Observe hundreds of small silver fish called grunion ride the waves onto La Jolla beaches to spawn. Before hitting the beach, see grunion hatch before your eyes during a special presentation about this mysterious fish. Prepare for cool, wet conditions and bring a flashlight.
Ages 6-13 must attend with a paid adult.

Spring Eggs-travaganza

Join us for “eggstra” special hands-on activities that highlight the wonder of reproduction in the ocean. Meet egg-laying marine animals and their eggs, including squids, fishes, and sharks. Make a shark egg craft, listen to special stories, and participate in a daily “scavenger-hunt” through the aquarium. Included with admission.
