This Friday June 8th San Diego County Fair will open it's gates! Each year the fair has a different theme and this year's theme is
This annual event takes place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd in Del Mar which is conveniently located next to Freeway I-5 just take the "Via de la Valle" exit and head West, you will easily find it as there are always orange cones guiding the way and staff members helping control traffic.
San Diegans go to the Fair to enjoy great family friendly events such as concerts, eating competitions, AgriFair, games and rides. There are also great exhibits. Let me give you more details on each of these:
The concerts are lots of fun and most of them are FREE with paid Fair admission {for unreserved seats only}, among the performers are: Cobra Starship, Demi Lovato, Cody Simpson, Kenny Loggins, Lonestar, Scotty McCreery, Creedence Clearwater, Train and Matisyahu just to name a few.
A couple of years ago {before we had kids} we would go to the concerts, not only are they lots of fun but also most of them start at sunset and it makes for the perfect setting. We enjoyed many reggae greats performing.
Among the exhibits there is always one that goes along with the theme and this year is no exception. "Out of this World" has two exhibits that offer fun and learning. At these exhibits you will learn about the Mars Rover {set to land in August}, learn about the Space Shuttle programs, learn about NASA's Apollo program you will also get to "step" on the moon and take pictures with Earth as your background!
Did I mention that there will also be an alien crash site? Fun right?
Fair goers have always loved the food variety the fair has to offer from deep fried Twinkies to funnel cake and let's not forget the caramel apples, snow cones, deep fried everything and my personal favorite cotton candy. This year there will also be healthier food options among those is the Pineapple express stand that will offer pineapple shrimp cocktail bowl and a fruit bowl.
Tuesdays are "Taste of the Fair" days and that means that each Tuesday you can buy a smaller portion of a featured food item for $2.00 at participating food booths.
The kiddie section is a family favorite, there are fun rides like this canoe that made our daughter think of Pocahontas "just around the river bend" and there is also a small ferris wheel and bumper cars the perfect size for 5 year olds to drive. There are also games to play and win toys or maybe you'd like a new pet fish all you have to do is play. Most games are $3.00 and under.
Every Wednesday and Thursday is "Pay one price" day, this means that you purchase a wristband at the fair for $30.00 and get to ride unlimited the rides at the fun zone and kiddieland. It is another way to save! {this promotion ends June 28th}
One of the most fun attractions at the fair is the AgriFair, at this section of the fair you will get to see goats, sheep, pigs, cattle, chickens, rabbits and horses. There is also a petting paddock where you can feed the animals and you can also see a turkey stampede!
Our kids enjoyed watching the horse show as the would exhibit all the can do from pulling a carriage to jumps.
The San Diego County Fair will be open from Friday June 8th through Wednesday July 4th. It is open Tuesday - Sunday and the only Monday it will be open is July 2nd. For more detailed information on hours, admission pricing and information on parking click here
Adventure Mom tip: If you need a stroller or wheelchair at the fair there is a renting both as you enter the fair grounds. On another note, make sure you bring a jacket as the sun sets it tends to get cooler.

I got to go to the fair once when I won tickets somewhere to see Bob Dylan. I just wish I lived closer, because its such a beautiful little fair compared to the OC Fair and the LA Fair. Both of those are fun, but way to big!
ReplyDeleteYes, it is the perfect size to go to and enjoy specially with little kids. We always like to see the art competitions and photographs. A friend of mine participated last year so that made it even more special to see her photograph on display with a ribbon! :)
DeleteOh I want to go a Tuesday! That sounds like fun to be able to try all the food for cheap prices
ReplyDeleteEmmy it is the best day, specially if you arrive early when you can park almost at the gate! If you do go make sure you try the caramel apples that are in the kiddie section they are one of the best I've had.
DeleteSounds like a ton of fun =)
