October is National Bullying Prevention Month, at the beginning of the month I shared my personal story as to how I was bullied in middle school and how I've dealt with bullying. For me this is a very special issue as I know how victims feel and through therapy I could further understand why bullies start.
Bully is a lift-the-flap book that is illustrated by Naomi Tipping. This book is excellent for learning about bullies, why they start, how to stop them, how to prevent bullying as well as how to spot a bullying victim.
It is a great resource book for school aged kids as it explains in detail in an easy way to comprehend what is considered bullying, that there are many ways to bully {i.e. physical, emotional, cyber-space}. The illustrations make it easy to understand and interactive so they keep readers engaged in the subject and they learn about it more.
What I loved most about this wonderful book was that in the last pages it reminds victims that they are not alone, that their feelings are valid and should be brought to other's attention specially parents. There is also a bully diary in which you can record the date and what happened. This is very therapeutic, it allows you to heal and deal with bullying. I know because it was one of my activities while in therapy. I actually still have the journal with names, what happened and how I felt.
Adventure Girl has read the book several times since we received it and here are her thoughts on it: "I learned about bullies, that sometimes making comments that are not kind can hurt someone and make a person a bully. We have to be nice to others and if someone is telling me hurtful things I can walkaway".
