Flight of the Butterflies.

The Stroller Adventures family loves butterflies! they come in all shapes and sizes and flutter so beautifully. We are always taking pictures of the ones we see and looking up videos of them. Soon we will be able to see then on IMAX! and you will too. Here's why:

On Friday October 5th a breathtaking new giant screen adventure from SK Films, is coming to the Heikoff Dome Theater at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center

Based on a remarkable true story, the epic film immerses viewers in a triumphant journey of perseverance that spans thousands of miles and several generations. Audiences will join scientists in tracking monarch butterflies to their mysterious Mexican winter haven where they will discover a truly spectacular sight: hundreds of millions of live butterflies in one of the most amazing places on Earth!

FLIGHT OF THE BUTTERFLIES is the awe-inspiring story of two unlikely heroes that share a common strength. Based on true events, it follows the epic journey of the iconic monarch butterfly in one of the most incredible migrations on Earth and the equally epic quest of determined scientist Dr. Fred Urquhart, who spent 40 years trying to discover the mysteries surrounding their journey and secret winter hideaway.

What began with a small boy daydreaming about where butterflies went each winter became a lifelong pursuit by Urquhart, who ingeniously enlisted the help of legions of volunteers, known as “citizen scientists,” to help with tagging and tracking the butterflies. The decades-long quest yielded the ultimate discovery of the monarch butterflies’ wintering sites in the sanctuaries of Mexico.

Through spectacular Giant Screen/IMAX® technology, audiences are transported into the tiny world of one intrepid creature—Dana (Danaus Plexippus)—and her offspring as they migrate north from Mexico, through the U.S., to Canada and back south again to the captivating hidden butterfly sanctuaries set 10,000 feet high in the mountains of the states of Michoacán and México.

The iconic monarch butterfly is a true marvel of nature. Weighing less than a penny, it makes one of the longest migrations on Earth across a continent, with pinpoint navigational accuracy, to a place it has never been. While much has been learned, scientists are still unraveling the many interrelated aspects of this phenomenon of the natural world. As the film illustrates, it takes two to three generations of butterflies to migrate north from Mexico through the U.S. to Canada and one “super generation” to complete the migration back south to Mexico.

In the immersive Giant Screen environment, moviegoers will experience this journey up close and see the evolution from egg to caterpillar to pupa to butterfly captured for the first time, thanks to MRI and micro CT scans—which bring audiences closer to the action than ever before. The close-up/macro photography work was undertaken in collaboration with Oscar® winner Peter Parks (The Tree of Life). The film team also travels high into the mountain ranges and up tree canopies into the monarch sanctuaries of Mexico to capture stunning real footage of hundreds of millions of these magnificent creatures.

FLIGHT OF THE BUTTERFLIES is a trilateral co-production between Mexico, Canada and the U.K. Director Mike Slee co-wrote the script with co-Executive Producer Wendy MacKeigan (Journey to Mecca: In the Footsteps of Ibn Battuta, The Water Brothers). The film’s Executive Producer is Jonathan Barker (Bugs! 3DInto the Deep 3D).

FLIGHT OF THE BUTTERFLIES received major funding from the National Science Foundation and includes an extensive educational outreach program, built in partnership with The Maryland Science Center. The world’s top monarch butterfly experts, including Dr. Chip Taylor, Dr. Karen Oberhauser and Dr. Lincoln Brower, served as scientific advisors to the film. Major support has also come from the Mexican Federal Government (Environment & Tourism) and the states of México and Michoacán, as well as from two of the most important companies in Mexico: Coca-Cola FEMSA, and Grupo Bimbo (the world’s largest baked goods company).

In 2008, UNESCO declared the monarch butterfly reserve in Mexico a World Heritage Site. Monarch butterflies depend on milkweed and milkweed habitats for survival. Despite efforts by the Mexican government to protect the sanctuaries, enforcement is difficult in remote regions and several forces persist in threatening the survival of the monarch butterfly migration, including the degradation of forest habitats, climate change, and side effects from industrial farming.

Significant portions of the film’s box office revenue will go toward monarch butterfly conservation through Mexico’s leading conservation organization, Fondo Mexicano para la Conservación de la Naturaleza.

FLIGHT OF THE BUTTERFLIES opens Friday, October 5, 2012, and will run in an open-ended engagement. The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center Heikoff Dome Theater is located at 1875 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101. IMAX admission (1 film + access to all exhibit galleries): Adults $15.75; Children $12.75; Seniors $12.75. Space Expo

The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center will host a SPACE EXPO featuring a Public Nierman Challenger Mission -‘Return to the Moon’ on Saturday August 4; and a Special Event for the Mars Rover Curiosity Landing, with the live NASA feed shown on the Heikoff Dome Theatre on Sunday August 5.  There will be space-related events in the galleries all weekend!

On Saturday, our public Nierman Challenger Mission will be ‘Return to the Moon.’  Take the ultimate trip by experiencing our realistic Mission Control and 21st century Space Station simulators! Two-hour program introduces you to the teamwork, technology and drama involved in space travel. In the year 2015 astronauts are on their way back to the moon to stay! Navigating their way into lunar orbit, participants launch a probe and analyze a variety of data to select a site for a permanent moon base.  Related activities include a Rover Landing Challenge in the Tinkering Studio; Ask a Planetary Scientist table (featuring the Magic Planet); Hands-on Activities at the E-bar.

All weekend, you can learn more about the upcoming Mars Landing by watching “7 Minutes of Terror” – a video produced by NASA about the dangers Curiosity will be facing - playing now on our Lobby Plasma screens.  Play our Xbox Kinect Rover Landing game to try to land Curiosity on Mars safely yourself. And try out Spacecraft 3D, an AR application that lets you view a 3D image of the Rover Curiosity and control its movements on your iPad or iPhone

On Sunday, join us for a special Mars Rover Curiosity Landing event.  NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission is the most ambitious, complex mission in the history of robotic space exploration. On 5-6 August 2012, the mission will set down a large, mobile laboratory - the dune buggy-sized Curiosity rover - using a new form of precision landing technology that makes many of Mars' most intriguing regions viable destinations for the first time.  During the 23 months after landing, Curiosity will analyze dozens of samples drilled from rocks or scooped from the ground as it explores with greater range than any previous Mars rover.  Curiosity will carry the most advanced payload of scientific gear ever used on Mars' surface, a payload more than 10 times as massive as those of earlier Mars rovers.  Its assignment: Investigate whether conditions have been favorable for microbial life and for preserving clues in the rocks about possible past life.

It is a historic moment in space exploration - Curiosity will be the first rover to land on the red planet since 2004, and the first spacecraft to land since 2008. NASA launched its latest mission to Mars on November 26, 2011. NASA expects Mars Rover Curiosity to land near the Martian equator at about 10:31PM PDT on August 5, 2012.

On Sunday, the Fleet will close as usual at 7PM and re-open at 8PM for the Mars Rover Curiosity Landing event ~ an opportunity to watch the live NASA feed of Curiosity’s challenging landing in the Heikoff Dome Theater at 10:31PM.  Leading up to the moment of truth, here’s the chance for you to cruise the Red Planet in a special Planetarium presentation at 8:30PM - a close-up look at Mars, the landing site, Gale Crater and other aspects of the red planet, narrated by resident astronomer Dr. Lisa Will.

We'll look over the shoulders of mission controllers during live NASA TV coverage of the landing, and maybe even see Curiosity's first views of its new home on the Red Planet.  Ongoing NASA coverage will be monitored beginning at 9PM, with interviews from Jet Propulsion Lab and NASA scientists about how the progress of the landing is proceeding.

You can ‘ask an astronomer’ any lingering questions, play Xbox Kinect Rover Landing and Spacecraft 3D, and have your photo taken with a life-size display of Mars Rover Curiosity – a true keepsake!  Members of the San Diego Astronomy Association will have their telescopes set up on the Prado for viewing – although Mars will be low in the sky that evening, with limited visibility.
