Adventures with shoes!

When my daughter was born I remember asking her pediatrician if a newborn needed shoes, he kindly responded explaining that she was not walking and her feet were growing so it was best to not put shoes on her until she began to walk. I did what any other mom of a girl would do and when she began to crawl I bought her a pair of the most girly mocs I could find at our local children's shoe store. By the time she was 2 years old she already had more pairs of shoes than I did!

To this day she is all about shoes, bright, colorful, sparkly and even sometimes with fur and lights in them. Each step she takes they light up.

Then when my son was born we did the same, however he kept taking his shoes off and off and off! Even the socks would come off. He is a winter baby and well in Southern California there really isn't much of a winter weather low 50s to mid 40s at night so I honestly was more relaxed about the shoe situation with him.

A couple of days after his first birthday he began to walk and almost immediately to run! By then he already had shoes that he liked wearing. Sneakers that were navy blue with neon green accents. Last Spring he had 2 pairs of shoes and a pair of sandals. During the summer all he wanted to wear were his sandals for obvious reasons, but I thought he looked cute in them. Then his feet grew and again we were left to scramble to find a pair he would like and enjoy to wear.

That's when the "braoun shos" -that's what he calls them-  came into our life.

These shoes are comfortable and they are warm enough for those cold winter days. He has jumped in puddles of rain and they are still going strong. I did not find any other pairs of shoes that he would wear or let me try them on him to see how he liked. We were alright with it and that was that.

I remember when my daughter was younger that a close friend of mine had to buy her son the same exact pair of shoes in different sizes as he would not wear any other shoes! I in all honesty couldn't believe what she was telling me and kept saying that she was the mom, she should teach her son about options. Little did I know that I was in for it big!

Two weeks ago we took my son to get a new pair of shoes, the ones he has still fit but in a little bit they wont. Getting to the mall was an adventure of its own! He is simply a complete and total boy and goes along with the stereotype that men do not enjoy shopping. As we walked into the store with him the battle began. He just did not want to sit down, typical toddler wanted to go up and down the escalator. Ok, so we knew his shoe size so we selected a pair for him, paid and were on our way.

As we got home we were excited to try on his new blue shoes. He wouldn't have it! He kept asking for "braoun shos" after a couple of tries that same week we thought well maybe it is because they are not as padded as the other ones. I went back to the store to exchange them for a more padded shoe and paid a small difference. Anything for his comfort.

Again same story as the pair before, in short after 3 different pairs of shoes I'm now leaning towards the same exact shoe in a larger size! I had no idea boys could be so picky. Or is it just a coincidence that I now know 5 boys from different families that went through the same exact adventure?

Also the girl that helped us at the shoe store told me that most of her customers that have sons do the same... buying the same pair in different sizes! She even told me there is a family that has the same shoe in all the sizes it is made! Well that's a thought.

Do you have a son? Is he loving the same pair of shoes? Tell me about your adventure with shoes and kids.

...And it was past 7!

Daylight Savings Time got me!

Did it get you?

It was a little darker than usual, no loud garbage collection truck at the crack of dawn outside my window to wake me up... and before I knew it

BAM!

It was already past 7 a.m.

Quick, get up... get ready for the day and make breakfast for the family -those were my only thoughts.

Oh wait, the kids are asleep still, that's unusual so what did I do? I got to enjoy a couple of minutes just chatting with Adventure Dad. That totally made my day, getting a few minutes to just wake up and chat.

Our day started a bit rough, Adventure Boy woke up and was a bit upset anything and everything would become a battle ending in tears. Adventure Girl was the last one to wake up and she was also a bit moody. What started as a good day slowly began going downhill and now as I sit here writing the kids are outside enjoying a picnic of snacks. They are smiling and dreaming of Spring, warmer weather and noticing the signs of Spring.

Hopefully tomorrow will be much easier on us and we can have a few minutes to just enjoy the sunrise, the quiet and stillness of our home.

THAT Mom

For the last couple of months our toddler has been going through what is commonly known as the terrible twos, now based on my experience with Adventure Girl and Adventure Boy I can honestly tell you that some kids have it more than others.

With Adventure Girl it went on un-noticed, but with Adventure Boy... Well that's a whole other story. This time around everywhere I go, everything I do Adventure Boy is with me. If I am home he is home, if I go out he is goes out with me.

Grocery shopping? He's with me.
A quick trip to Target? He's with me.
Drop-off? With me.
Pick-up? With me.

He's been testing the waters to see how much my patience will stretch, how far he may go and how much my tolerance will take. Children in the same family are so different. Their needs are very different and can be complete opposites.

Last week as I was battling a cold we took a trip to Target to stock up on some essentials, while shopping I noticed both kids were well behaved and was able to make our quick shopping trip an enjoyable experience. Then as I was walking towards another aisle I heard a mom telling her children to behave, as I listened to her all I could think was "hang in there mom" then we entered that aisle she too had a boy and a girl about the same age of my children and as our eyes met it was like we knew how she felt. I could understand her completely!

I knew what she was feeling. Lately our errands have turned into small nightmares where the toddler is screaming bloody murder at the top of his lungs while Adventure Girl is asking for something and me? Well I am praying for a little more patience to take control over the situation and that no one pays attention to us. That we don't get "The look" because nothing is worse than dealing with your kids while having to do grocery shopping while your kids are making difficult for you and people just stare you down as if judging how you are parenting and then you are... THAT mom!

"THAT mom" that allowed her children to cry while shopping, "THAT mom" that because she was standing her grounds on not buying what was not needed is making her children cry. "THAT mom" that will not leave the store because she ran out of milk at home and knows that if she leaves there will still be no milk or fruit at home.

So on this particular shopping trip when I saw a mom dealing with her kids, I smiled at her and then said "it will get better". She smiled back at me and said "Thank you, I really needed some understanding". We had a small conversation and her children were talking to Adventure Boy and Girl after that everyone was all smiles and ready to finish shopping.

How many times have you seen "THAT mom" trying to accomplish something while her children are challenging her and not once did you cut her some slack or smiled without judging her. Times have changed and people are forgetting that they were once children themselves and that maybe just maybe they were just as much or even more difficult than the children "THAT mom" has.

So next time you see a mom having a hard day with her children, don't judge her. For all you know she just needs some encouragement that everything will be ok.

Have you met "THAT mom"

Toddler Tuesday week 05/22

We are getting into the habit of taking walks around our neighborhood in the morning and walk observing nature. Sometimes we see bumble bees, butterflies and others we see squirrels and beautiful birds. What we do see every single time is beautiful flowers that are so fragrant.

Lately our toddler has been intrigued and enjoying the anti-slipping floor mat that is setup on the bridge near our home. It is for when it rains, but he thinks it is for massaging his feet. Today was no exception! He also made a new friend... This lovely cat followed us around and then walked near Adventure Boy and he happily complied to his requests to be petted. It was so cute!

Toddler Tuesdays week 05/08

This picture says it all!

Both Adventure Girl and Boy were watching as Adventure Dad left for work. They stood there next to the sliding door that leads to our patio saying "bye daddy!" over and over until they couldn't see him anymore.

I sat back at our dining table and observed as they waved goodbye. Adventure Boy is only 2 years old but he understands that dad leaves in the morning for work, but before he knows it dad is back home from work. Believe me he somehow knows the time too, when evening rolls around he starts looking out that same sliding door and begins saying: "papi?, papi?".

Toddler Tuesday week 04/17

It's always interesting to see how toddlers have little pet peeves, even at such a young age. Take our toddler for example who will only take one bite out of his chicken nuggets! yes, only one bite and then will take another new un-bitten nugget to eat. I share with you the picture above as an example of this. The same happens for toast, pizza and any other finger foods. Only one bite and then on to the next, so when possible we cut up into bite size squares his food. It is one of the only ways to solve this...

Do you have any suggestions on how to handle this? Please feel free to share with us on the comments section.

Toddler Tuesdays week 04/10

I am truly fascinated by our toddler, just like I was with his older sister at this age. They are so analytical and observe every little detail, it is truly amazing how much they can grasp and surprising that they pay so much attention to the little things.

Even though they grow, toddlers need to cuddle and some more than others. I love how he can sit for just a couple of minutes pondering on what he saw during the day in our arms. Before our move our routine was very well established, getting up in the morning and getting to sit with dad for a couple of minutes just cuddling. Now it has changed, he gets to sit with me. I am truly enjoying this. Toddlers are so affectionate and so lovable.

Like blowing kisses and saying "I wuv u" literally makes anyone in the room melt.

What new milestones is your toddler achieving? does he/she like to cuddle?

Toddler Tuesdays week 04/03

It's fascinating to watch as a toddler explores his new surroundings, we recently moved after living in the same home for 8 years. Both our kids were born in the home we left behind, both sets of grandparents were always a quick one hour trip away. We are now an 8 hour drive away or a 90 minute flight away. Of course it is different at our new home. We lived in a 4 bedroom house with a backyard that had our swing set and outdoor toys. We are now in an apartment it is completely different and new to us, specially for our kids. However the kids had new friends from the day we moved in and our toddler is enjoying the trees that sway to the beat of the wind.

It is in these moments when we realize how much he is growing. As his older sister always says: "mommy wouldn't you like to freeze brother so he could stay cuddly forever?" {yes I do get teary eyed with that comment} and you know what I would love to freeze both my kids to stay this age forever, but I also understand that they need to grow, explore their world and enjoy life to the fullest.

How do you feel when you see your toddler explore the world?

Toddler Tuesday week 03/13

Today as every Tuesday I took our toddler to his Mommy & me class, usually at circle time he fidgets, is wondering around the classroom or just wants to do his own thing at the toy corner. However, since last Tuesday there has been a major improvement: finally he is participating, hooray for that!

I have to admit this caught me by surprise as he always just sits at the table and observes or plays with stickers while the other children in class listen for their name and place their name card in its place and high five the teacher. I am beyond happy and amazed at how much children can mature in just a couple of days.

High five to our teacher Ms. Lori for guiding me and working with us, being patient is not my thing so this is not also teaching our son but also teaching me as a mom to be a little more flexible and choose my battles. :)

What has your toddler been up to? Have you noticed anything different in him/her?

Toddler Tuesdays week 02/28

Every Tuesday for the past couple of months our toddler and I attend a Parenting Class in which both kids and parents or caregivers learn about parenting, do crafts, learn colors, numbers, letters, the teacher reads a story and of course the children benefit on socializing skills as well as kindergarten readiness. Our teacher Ms. Lori is so sweet and patient with all of the parents and children's and runs a tight ship teaching us on how to handle issues that may arise with our children in a very comfortable and personal way.

Today was no different, we went to class attempted to make the craft and as always our toddler refuses to participate in the craft making unless it's related to trains or cars.

Class is from birth to 3 years of age we all know that at 3 years we will be leaving the class and moving on to either a different parenting class or preschool. {In case you didn't know it is not required by law that kids in California attend preschool, which leads to us parents scrambling around and signing up at wait lists to get into preschools, parenting classes or mommy and me}

We are grateful in every way that our City and Adult School offer these parenting classes because they not only help our children prepare for kindergarten, but they also help us as parents learn that we are not alone in the daily struggles we face. The Terrible Two's got nothing on the 3's, 4's, 5's and 6's. I can guarantee parenting children as they get older gets a bit more challenging until they are adults and can decide for themselves we are responsible for them to learn from right and wrong.

If you have a child 5 of age or under I highly suggest you find a parenting class in your area and take your child each week. The benefit is for your family and child. As a sign in Ms. Lori's class reads: "The best investment is spending time with your child". It is so true! Bonding is key at a young age. The benefits are endless, how do I know? My now 6 year old was in Ms. Lori's class and learned so much. We both did.

Toddler Tuesdays week 02/21

This week our toddler has been talking more and more each day, well yesterday for the first time he said: "I luv u mama" it totally made me smile and my heart swelled up in joy. Those precious words from him were major for me. I guess they are for any mom, I remember when my 6 year old said them for the first time precious!

How did you feel the first time your child said "I love you"?

Toddler Tuesdays week 02/14

Our toddler is becoming more and more interested in technology. This week he has been reaching for his sister's DS to play with it and surprisingly to me he has learned to take pictures and choose the game he would like use. He is starting to enjoy coloring even though it is just scribbles and dots that he makes with either the crayon or marker.

What has your toddler been up to this week?

Toddler Tuesdays week 02/07

Independence and freedom is what every toddler desires and this day, this very day that we visited the San Diego's Zoo Polar Bear Plunge our toddler enjoyed roaming the exhibit out and about. Not worrying for his stroller. He enjoyed running around with other kids of course until he had to get back in the stroller to get back to the other side of the zoo.

How does your toddler enjoy freedom and independence?

Toddler Tuesdays week 01/31

All toddlers are cute and they also know how to butter the adults up, specially when it comes to them breaking a rule. Our toddler has been climbing onto furniture like a little monkey. It is amazing how a little boy that is a few inches tall can climb so high -it is also scary. That is why we have decided to keep our home baby proofed until he figured out how to climb the changing table!

He now climbs it as if it were some sort of play structure and then starts asking for a diaper change -as if that would make it ok- even when he doesn't need one.

Guess we will have to potty train soon! ;)

What adventures is your toddler up to this week? does he/she climb up furniture?

Here we are playing Cat/Mouse

It's not fun getting sick, it certainly puts a stop to all your plans and when medicine needs to be taken it is definitely not an easy task specially with toddlers. This past weekend our whole family was sick except for the toddler. Until he began to cough so out come the inhalers and in he goes to their play tent to hide from them. We would play cat/mouse chasing after him to give him his treatment. Until....

He saw his sister do it peacefully, yes she is 6 years old and has been taking inhalers forever! She is an asthma patient and knows the drill all to well now. So when he saw her doing it on her own he did what she did. He came sat patiently and took his treatment without fighting it. :)

How do you get your toddler to take his/her meds when they are sick? Share your ideas with us.

Toddler Tuesdays week 01/17

Toddlers can be so smart it honestly makes your jaw drop! recently we were shopping at an electronics super store when our toddler got a little impatient I turned to see if I could find something to keep him entertained while I talked to the sales guy and when I found a play system I decided to "park" him next to it and give him one of the controllers -after all what would he do with it!?. Well to our surprise our little guy managed to figure out the game and scored some points. The sales guy kept asking me what his age was. I still to this day -weeks after this incident- can not figure it out.

What adventure has your toddler had that left you in awe?

This past week we took our toddler to the San Diego Model Railroad Museum, boy was he in for a fantastic day. He loves trains, plays with them and watches them on TV. He liked watching them zoom by at the museum and enjoyed it very much.

If you haven't been to the San Diego Model Railroad Museum we highly recommend it specially if you have a toddler boy. It's lots of fun!

Toddler Tuesdays week 1

Last week we met up with some friends for a fun play date at Zoomars in San Juan Capistrano -it is a fun petting zoo- as we approached the sheep/goat corral our toddler was tempted to get into the sheep's house! He kept pushing the sheep out of the way, I have to admit his determination was entertaining and funny!

Toddler Tuesday week 12/20

2 year olds enjoy playing with their toys, but even more fun is the box the toy came in! This box is now his garage!
