Learn about Ensenada!

A couple of months ago through a pin on Pinterest I discovered a blog that I am now a fan of, Mary Ann is the founder/owner and editor at Mama Smiles. Her site is full of great homeschooling resources, printables, crafts and my personal favorite world culture for kids.

What makes Mama Smiles fascinating to me is the endless list of posts that have been contributed by other bloggers from around the globe. You learn facts, cuisine, history and geography from these amazing places. I was a bit curious to see that in her list there wasn't one post about Mexico, me being half Mexican and lover talking about its culture, traditions and a little town that has grown into a city.

I  contacted Mary Ann and after we getting a positive response from her I immediately got to work on images and writing about Ensenada. I took advantage of our soon travel to lovely Baja and today my post can be found on the World Culture for Kids: Ensenada, Mexico

Both Mary Ann and I hope you enjoy learning about Ensenada and take your time to read about other countries such as Brazil, India and our soon to be new home Costa Rica.

Thank you Mary Ann for this great opportunity and for uniting bloggers in a great positive way.

While in Baja

A couple of weeks ago we traveled to beautiful Ensenada Baja Mexico, I've shared videos with you while we were traveling. Today I'd like to share something different. Whenever I travel I personally love visiting places where the locals go such as grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, malls, etc.

Not exactly to shop, but mostly because I find it fascinating to observe and find differences but also what every City has in common with another. In this case I visited a grocery store and let me tell you it is not your regular super market.

The variety of products is endless! For example say you are looking for yogurt, here in Silicon Valley when I've gone to buy some at a local grocery store I only see a regular size refrigerator with all the options, but in Baja I found not one, not two but three! Yes, that's right three large refrigerators filled with all the different options.

Did you say you were looking for fish? Well it's fresh caught this morning, you can buy it whole or in fillet, they will also clean it for you at no extra charge!

As for the deli counter, I loved it so much! the fact that you say how much you want of each and the service... Wow, let me tell you Mexico knows a lot about customer service. At the grocery store they were so nice and helpful. Well here are some images of what I am talking about. Next time you travel make it a point to visit a grocery store or a drugstore just to see what you find in common. :)

Adventures in Ensenada

Last week we took our second road trip for 2012 to Ensenada Baja Mexico, we spent the entire week there enjoying the scenery and all it has to offer. Here are some videos I made to share what we did and saw.

While at the Beach...

While taking an evening walk through the former Hotel/Casino "Riviera", which was very popular in the 20s {specially amongst Hollywood stars}

I hope you enjoyed these videos, I am slowly learning to do vlogging. I even created a new you tube channel StrllrAdvnturs and hope you will visit all my videos there too.

Fresh Beat Band

Last weekend we had the pleasure of attending the Fresh Beat Band Live! in San Diego. We had purchased the tickets around Thanksgiving when we first found out they were on tour and would have a concert in our city.

We are BIG fans of the Fresh Beat Band, on any given day you will see my kids watching them on TV as well as dancing or repeating words here and there.

DID ANYBODY SAY BANANAS?

My daughter -who is 6 years old- was beyond excited when we told her we were going to see the show on Saturday. She began planning on what she would wear and what I would wear {she dressed in Kiki's colors -pink and I dressed in true Marina style -purple and turquoise}

When the show began we were both excited, just as we had seen them on TV they had us singing and dancing -yes I was one of the 2 moms rocking and rolling to their tunes!

After their show we were invited to attend the VIP party {it was a great surprise and we are thankful! ;) } My daughter could not believe she would get to meet Twist, Shout, Marina and Kiki. She would also get to take pictures with them and ask them some questions. Like Marina, what is your favorite song? to which she said "You got a friend in me" and my daughter was so excited because that is hers too! Twist, are you taller than my daddy? he then stood up and posed for a picture asking her if he was taller, he is about the same height.

The VIP Party -in case you haven't heard of it- is a great one of a kind experience, it is a party after the show for which you need to purchase a separate ticket to attend. At the party there is DJ Veggie Snacks playing music, there is a trunk full of dress up clothes, they have a play area with a pop up tent and tunnel there is also several inflatable guitars and they have bongo drums for kids to play, there are tables set up with crayons, stickers, Fresh Beat Band coloring sheets. They have healthy snacks that are delicious too and drinks.

Coloring pages and materials to use for them
After meeting Kiki, Marina, Shout and Twist we can honestly say they are very sweet and love meeting their fans! Thank you Fresh Beats for an awesome concert we went Bananas with you and Shouted out just like a Rock-Star we also had a great day, it was a super way to spend some time together.

Until next time, keep on rocking Fresh Beats. :)

DISCLOSURE: I paid for our own tickets and this post is not a compensated post. I just wanted to share our experience at the concert since we enjoyed it so much! We were invited by their VIP party coordinators to attend the after party, which facilitated my review and comments.

Fun Fact Friday week 01/27

Yes it's January, the end of it though. Still here in San Diego or Sun Diego as many call it, we feel as if we were in summer. My daughter -who is in first grade, came home from school the other day and asked about Groundhog Day. That really got me thinking, because here we only get snow in the mountains and this winter has not had the best snow or rain for that matter.

Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2 every year. It is the day where people visit Punxsutawney PA to attend a special ceremony where the groundhog comes out of a heated burrow and looks for his shadow. If he sees his shadow it means that there are 6 more weeks left of winter. If he does not see his shadow then spring is closer.

Did you know that the groundhogs burrow is electrically heated? and that he is called Punxsutawney Phil? I didn't either.

I still am curious about Punxsutawney Phil the famous groundhog, I wonder what if he would see his shadow if were here in San Diego? For now my kids are enjoying the weather, riding their bike/trike and playing in our backyard. ;)

Holiday LEGO Train Exhibit

Yesterday was the first Tuesday of the month and of the year! so to celebrate the beginning of a new year filled with adventures I took the kids to visit the San Diego Model Railroad Museum.

Our 2 year old is quite the railroad fan, specially now that he has his own train table equipped with wooden  trains for him to play with.

Admission is always FREE for San Diego residents every first Tuesday of the month, with proof of ID. We took advantage of this opportunity to see a limited time display of the Holiday Lego Train Exhibit. It is simply amazing! Not only that they have a sign that lists items to look for in the display. So you can play "I spy" with your child and that way not miss a single detail!

In my 6 year old's words: "This is super cool!" the best part? -6 year old's response: "R2D2 and Princess Leia!"

So much attention to detail makes it a great exhibit even for adults! trains moving left to right and right to left so much fun.

The Holiday LEGO Train Exhibit has been on display since November 22 and will end on Saturday January 14th, which means that you only have a few days left to enjoy this special exhibit.

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park is open Tuesday - Friday from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Saturday - Sunday from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Children are always FREE with a paid adult.
